YORK City Rowing Club's latest new arrival, the 'Davygate', has given junior squad members a competitive boost.

The acquisition of the double sculls boat was made possible by a donation from the Halifax/Lloyds Bank who have a branch on Davygate in York city centre.

Phil Jones, the head junior coach and co-ordinator, said: “This new boat will help our talented young rowers to further success."

Club captain Sean Potter said: "It's great to see the youngest members of the club rewarded with top quality racing equipment. Thanks to the generous sponsorship, we can now look forward to seeing this new boat on the water both on the Ouse and at events across the country."

The next event run by York City Rowing Club takes place on Sunday November 20 with 400 crews racing in three divisions between Fulford Landing and King's Staith.

Founded in 1863, the club boasts nearly 300 members of all abilities.

Based on the banks of the Ouse, near Lendal Bridge, the club’s ranks include rowers of all ages and welcomes new members of any experience.

Past members include Olympic gold medallist Tom Ransley and Sally Downing who represented Great Britain in the Junior World Championship last year.

The club's junior squad, aged 12 to 18, has around 60 members and the majority are from state schools.

Success in 2016 has included international selection for Lucy Edmunds and England representation for Charlie MacMahon.
