YORK & District Indoor Bowls Club have taken the Yorkshire Summer League title for the first time.

York topped their table after their group matches, then won the end-of-season play-offs at their home venue.

Playing section 'A' runners-up Doncaster in their first game, York trailed 17-11 with two ends to go but turned it round in startling fashion.

The rink of Alan Vowles, Derek Walker and Helen Wood bagged a five then a single to snatch an 11-9 victory, while Joan Jackson, Melanie Brooke and Graham Brooke took a single then a five to finish 12-8, giving the host club maximum points from the game.

They then bagged another maximum-point haul off neighbours New Earswick.

They got off to a good start as Graham Brooke's trio - now with Charlie Arnett in for Melanie Brooke - led 7-0 after five ends on their way to an 11-6 victory over Eric Cookson's team.

Wood's team - with Chris Bishop in for Derek Walker - led Carole Thompson, Lynn Page and Vic Thompson 11-0 after six ends before New Earswick got on the board with a three.

The final score was 13-6.

The last round of matches saw York needing only one drawn rink against pre-tournament favourites Featherstone to take the trophy - and they won the game 19-17, picking up four points.

Graham Brooke's rink - with Melanie Brooke now back in for Joan Jackson - trailed only 6-5 with five ends to play but lost four of them and their game 11-6.

But Wood's rink led 9-0 after only three ends and went on to win 13-6 - ending as be the only unbeaten rink throughout the day.

In their first match, New Earswick had lost 25-13 on aggregate to section 'A' winners Featherstone but took a point off them as Sandra Helmsley, Alistair Domville and Eric Cookson picked up a four then a two on their last two ends to secure a 10-10 draw.

Featherstone also dropped three points in a 19-19 draw with Doncaster.

New Earswick gained a consolation 24-24 draw in their last game against Doncaster with Vic Thompson's team picking up an impressive 15-5 victory while Cookson's side ensured a share of the aggregate points thanks to a four on their last end to finish losing 19-9.
