DUNNINGTON finished up as runners-up to Poppleton in division one of the IT Sports Mixed Tennis League after ending their season with a big win at Rufforth.

Alfie Hubble and Karen Mitchell led the way with 29 games and were matched by team-mates Emma Loten and Brad Swainston.

Eleanor Bradshaw and Ben Walker again remained unbeaten as Wigginton beat York, well supported by unbeaten Sue Espiner and Phil Langley. Wiggy finished third, just above York.

The relegation issues in division two have finally been resolved with Wigginton 2 going down after losing their decider against York 3, for whom Caroline White and Jamie Winspear were unbeaten.

York had to win to stay up, having lost their penultimate match to table-toppers Heworth, who were led by unbeaten Louise Haritakis and captain Nick Latcham.

Sandra Pauw and Nils Morosz were Rowntree Park’s top scorers as they edged Poppleton by four games. However, York's win at Wigginton meant they went down on games difference. Dunnington ended Bubwith’s outside chance of the second promotion spot after a draw and they now have to play Wetherby Castlegarth knowing victory a win will promote them.

The division five title race came down to a last-match thriller between Riccall and Rowntree Park.

Riccall had home advantage but Park’s Laura Robson and Kevin Davison were unbeaten, winning 25 games to seal the victory and complete an all-important double over their well-matched opponents.

A last-round 10-2 win by top-scorers Lorraine Bishop and Chris Abbott ensured Cawood won at Sutton upon Derwent, meaning they finished in third place on games difference above Alne and York, who slipped to fifth after losing to Fulford in their last match.

Fulford’s Kelly Spry and James Allen were top scorers just ahead of Sue Scott and Alex Herriott.

Rufforth topped division six after a good win at Wigginton, Denise Riley and Andy Ivel putting together another match-winning performance as they took the title by just one point ahead of Tollerton.

They were backed up by Christine and Will Edmund.

Tollerton wrestled the second promotion place from Wilberfoss on games difference.

Dunnington finished second in division seven behind Cliffe after unbeaten Sarah Grinnell and Oscar Hubble top scored to fend off the challenge by long-time rivals Heworth, who also finished with a victory at Sutton upon Derwent.

Christine Vis and Nick Milner outscored Heworth team-mates Monica Haritakis and Andy Cuttill.

Tollerton 2 have captured the division eight trophy, to complete a good double for the club.

The battle for the runners-up spot eventually went to New Earswick on games difference ahead of Bishopthorpe, the team they met in their final encounter.

Nicky Georgiou and Keith Pearson won 11-1 in their final rubber for Earswick to secure the points and promotion.

The division nine title has also been decided on games difference as long-time leaders Wilberfoss 3 had to wait for Rufforth 3 to play their rearranged matches.

Rufforth had a six-game win at Dunnington 6, with Katie Peek-Vout and Kris Knowles proving unbeatable, and they then won at Bishopthorpe 4.

However, despite the 31 games won by Kate Lewis and Dan Russell, Rufforth were unable to win enough overall to take the title and ended as runners-up.
