RACING driver Katie Milner won both her recent races at Croft – and secured a place in the history books.

Starting in pole position and cheered on by friends and family at her home circuit, she notched two first places to extend her overall lead in the Junior Saloon Car Championship.

That means Milner has surpassed Sarah Moore’s record as the only female to have won five races in national junior racing competitions, with six wins under her belt so far.

It also means that her dreams of being the first girl ever to win the championship are becoming increasingly likely.

The 16-year-old from Huggate – the daughter of two-time British Rally champion, Jonny – started in poll position in both her races.

She maintained her lead in race one from the outset and pulled it back in race two after momentarily dropping back to third.

“After being so close to winning both races in previous meets and narrowly missing out, it means so much to me to have won both times this weekend," she said.

“I was so overwhelmed afterwards that I couldn’t speak or take it in. I was amazed, too, by the amount of family and friends who turned out to watch and support me.

"I can’t tell them how much I appreciate that – it’s really helping to spur me on.”

Milner's Team Merlin Motorsport team-mate Ollie Willmott came second to Katie in both races, meaning it was a real team achievement.

Ollie took fastest lap in race one, while Milner was fastest in race two, meaning more points for their team entry.

She has two heats and four races remaining in which to secure the title. The next leg takes place at Knockhill in Scotland, on September 10 and 11.

This will be her final year in the JSCC and the youngster is already setting her sights on moving up to the Mini Challenge competition, catering for the 17 and upwards age group, in 2017.

Her ultimate dream is to eventually compete in the adult British Touring Car Championships.

Milner, who is being mentored by former Williams F1 test driver Susie Wolff, is also raising funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust and anyone wishing to make a donation can do so at justgiving.com/katiemilner50.

Her sponsors include Nimbus Motorsport, Torco, Autocool Radiator, Women in Motorsport and Dare To Be Different.
