MALTON & Norton Juniors won the York Union of Golf Clubs Junior Team Championship for the first time since 2008 – but only after a narrow escape for Jack Boyd.

Held at Sandburn Hall GC, the event, played as an individual stableford, produced some fine performances, with scores aggregated to a team total.

Boyd, however, had the wrong information regarding his tee time and arrived late – with less than a minute left before he was ruled out of the competition.

Despite his two-point penalty deduction, his score – added to the contributions from team-mates Christina Rumbelow, Poppy Rudd and Lewis Stead – gave M&N a three-card aggregate of 104, two points clear of runners-up York.

In the individual competition, Alfie Barlow (Easingwold) handed in a worthy 38 points, which was matched by Lucy Gallacher (Pike Hills) and Lewis West (Fulford).

The award for the best individual not in the winning team was collected by Adam Copley of the host club with a superb 39 points.

The Malton & Norton team will now represent the York Union in the IDU Junior Club Team Championship to be held at Middlesbrough GC on July 10, the winners of which will get an invitation from England Golf to represent Yorkshire in the National final at Frilford Heath in August.
