YORK and Selby will host a Go Spike Big Weekend event this bank holiday weekend.

York Volleyball Club will open its doors for people of all ages to join them at their festival of volleyball, with activities suitable for all ages and abilities.

Sessions are on Saturday, by Millennium Bridge, York, from 11am to 3pm and on Monday, at 3 Portholme Road, Selby.

Activities include the traditional volleyball set-up, be it indoor or on grass, sitting volleyball as seen at the recent Invictus Games, and beach volleyball.

Club chairman Tim Godson said: “We’re inviting the whole of both towns to come along and join us at our Go Spike Big Weekend event.

“It’s free to join in and we’d love to see as many people as possible come along and try it.

“We will be setting up the nets for all standards to join in, with prizes to be won.”

In the past, more than 50 people have attended the event in York and the club are hoping for more this time.

Godson added: "This is the first-ever event in Selby and if we get good numbers we are planning to run more volleyball in the town in the future."

A second Go Spike Big Weekend will follow in August.

Meanwhile, York Volleyball Club members enjoyed an introduction to beach volleyball with the help of some coaching from a couple of British champions.

Laura Heyworth and Freya Newton, both 18, were among a group of players from York who took part in an event in Whitby where they were given tips by two of Britain's best players, Olympic hopeful Jake Sheaf and Chris Gregory.

Heyworth, from All Saints RC School, who has been playing volleyball for six years, said: “It’s the first time we’ve played pairs.

"Mainly we play four-a-side but this has been interesting as you really learn to play well together. We know exactly where we are on the court.”

The York club made an impact in the boys' competition with Stuart Gibbon and Ben Macdonald taking the top prize and club-mates Pepe Bean and Luca Rago filling the runners-up spots.
