A FANTASTIC end to the Winter Series of the European Junior Golf Tour saw Jake Sowden win the Order of Merit for 2015-16 and add another trophy to his collection.

Sowden, 12, plays out of The Oaks Golf Club, at Aughton, near York, and is coached by John Mellor and Graham Walker.

He also trains with the Yorkshire 'B' squad, with an immediate ambition to represent his county.

He has played on the EJGT for almost two years and won his age group in 2015, winning on some of the top Championship golf courses in the UK, including St Anne’s Old Links, Whittington Heath, Enville, Northamptonshire County, Goodwood, Tenby, Prestatyn and Bull Bay.

The ten to 11 years age group was the strongest age group of the year with several leading juniors competing.

Last year Sowden, from Howden, also won his place to play in The Tours 54-hole International Championship at La Cala, Spain, while he also represented the EJGT at Woburn Golf Club at the Ian Poulter Invitational Day last July.

Meanwhile, the 11th annual inter-village charity golf tournament held at Sandburn Hall saw 63 competitors from several local villages take part, with the winning team coming from the Grey Horse, Elvington.

The event, sponsored by Horsley Transport, raised £1,150 for Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity at York Hospital. Over the years the tournament has raised more the £10,000 for good causes.
