THE two biggest clubs in the Tyke Petroleum Men's Tennis League faced off at Clifton Park, with the honours going to York as they beat David Lloyd in divisions one and three.

York 1sts consistently edged the rubbers in a keenly-fought top-table contest, to claim nine points from 59 games won.

Captain Pete Goodall and Paul Blackett could not be beaten, returning 2½-20.

A 3-25 maximum from David Lloyd 2’s Nick Pears and Paul Chappell, meant York 2 failed to win a single round on points, but they did steal the games by 56 to 52 for an overall single-point win.

Rowntree Park clung on to division one top spot despite a heavy loss to champions Poppleton.

Pop captain Nick Turnbull and Nikki Rohlfing lost just six games against the early title aspirants.

Academy controlled their derby at Starbeck from the off, with Tim Rawlings and David Brown ending unbeaten alongside Mat Parry and Richard Bancroft.

After a sobering defeat at Academy, Wigginton were in no mood to party at Racquets. Jason Whiting and Ben Walker grafted to 3-24 against the division two champions, as Wiggy returned home with a ten-point haul.

Sutton-on-Derwent’s Max Los and Nick Ridley had the measure of Bubwith, but their team-mates could not stop the division two leaders making it three wins from three.

Hot on Bubwith's heels are Dunnington, who would have had a clean sweep at Knaresborough but for a mid-match injury. Jonny Kay and Dave Beattie were a one-pair team, battling Wigginton 2 to a dead heat, thanks to a final round 8-4 against host number ones Matt Waudby and Chris Burnham.

"Being at home helped... and Paul Kaye was keen to beat his old team-mates."

That was how Boston Spa captain Jordan Gregory explained how his winless team defeated runaway division three leaders Appleton Roebuck.

Kaye and Matt Lewis indeed went all out, returning 3-24, as Spa edged a humdinger 55-53.

Harlow’s double-header with Heworth was thwarted by a late drop-out.

Gordon Bruce and Jack Lewis scored 3-26 as York 3 topped division four with an enormous win at Copmanthorpe 2.

Rowan Brookes continued his spree, pairing Carlos Gabaldon to 3-31 for Starbeck 3, at Bishopthorpe.

Poppleton 3’s "long, hard season" got easier as the latest influx of Turnbull academy youngsters - teens Ed Hobson and Barney Baker - rattled off 3-23 at home to Fulford 2.

Division five leaders Wetherby 1 are looking unstoppable, averaging nearly 11 points a match, with maximums from Jeremy Reddish and David Corbyn keeping them in the pink at Wilberfoss.

Only captain Mike Park and son Ollie, with 2-18, could put a dint in armour-plated Starbeck 2, victorious after the short hop to Wetherby 2.

The top senior return was 3-32 by Dave Tomlinson and Luke Crowther for Cliffe at home to Sheriff Hutton.

Sutton-on-Derwent 2’s first match on their new grass yielded them all but a half point in division seven.

Visiting York 4 were mown down by Dave Nowell and captain Mark Pryce for 3-27.

A 2½-22 final round fightback earned Wheldrake a draw at home to Bishopthorpe 2, who had anticipated their first win of the year.

There was another big win for Riccall, this time against Alne & Tollerton 2, meaning the leaders are averaging 11 points a match.

Neil Hawkins and Ben Drummond with 3-29 led Alne & Tollerton 1 to a surprising 12 points against out-of-sorts Wilberfoss 2 in division eight.

There was a close call for David Lloyd 3, who left it late to snatch a winner at home to Selby.

Top pair were Wigginton 3’s Stu Langley and Scott Farquhar, with 3-34 against a junior David Lloyd 4 team.
