SENSEI Oliver Willison led the way as Pocklington Karate Centre members of all ages returned from the WOMAA-WKS European Championships in Solihull with a haul of 13 medals.

Willison won gold and European champion status in the men’s senior grade kata (choreographed patterns).

And in the team kata competition, Willison earned another gold along with kata partner Grace Smelt.

Club-mates Daniel Goodall, Simon Goodall, Jonny Goodall and Will Brigham all also took bronze medals.

In the lower grade adult kata, Jonny Goodall took gold and Ben Rawlings bronze, while Steve Fleetham was unlucky to miss out on a medal.

Rawlings and Fleetham had earlier made competitive debuts in the adult men's kata veterans' category, acquitting themselves well but without breaking into the top three against several senior black belts.

In the kumite (fighting) events, Brigham turned in an excellent performance to take another bronze, while Simon Goodall narrowly lost out to the eventual silver medallist.

Daniel Goodall was forced into early retirement by a broken elbow.

The Pock club, meanwhile, made a clean sweep in the adult foam sword fighting - Willison took his third gold and European title, Fleetham earned silver and Brigham took bronze, his third podium place of the day.

In the junior section, five-year-old Olivia Willison followed in her father’s footsteps by earning silver medals for under-6 kumite and foam sword fighting, as well as bronze in kata.

Oscar Fleetham won a silver in a strong under-10s junior kata.

Willison said: "All who entered from Pocklington Karate Centre can be rightly proud of themselves, and this display was a real credit to the club demonstrating the high standard of teaching passed on by the Senseis and all involved."
