THE president of the Lawn Tennis Club, Cathie Sabin, visited Wheldrake Tennis Club’s open morning.

The courts at Wheldrake had suffered with standing water during the heavy rains over the winter and financial support from the LTA enabled them to be rejuvenated into excellent condition.

The club run a full coaching programme for juniors of all ages and have recently launched a weekly ladies only session to encourage beginners and returners to tennis.

On July 17, the club are offering free tennis under the banner of "Great British Tennis Weekend" and are also participating in the Davis Cup Legacy Scheme.

Meanwhile, Fulford Tennis Club celebrated the opening of their newly resurfaced courts with a first club tournament of the year.

The club’s three courts have been resurfaced for the first time for almost 15 years, with votes now being taken on what colour they should be painted.

Fulford TC, established for more than 50 years, have about 50 adult and 25 junior members and run 11 teams in the York leagues - six mixed, three ladies and two men's. Junior programs are also held at the club.

Heworth Tennis Club are to hold an open afternoon on Sunday, from 2pm to 4pm.

The event is part of the club's commitment to Sport for All and will showcase their new clubhouse, which is now a new community facility.

Newcomers can play tennis, meet members and find out about coaching and playing options for all ages. All are welcome.
