ACOMB 'A' need only one point from their last match to secure the York Conservative Clubs Carlsberg UK Snooker League championship.

They go into it seven points clear of nearest rivals Fulford 'A' after defeating last year's champions Malton 4-3.

Dan Potter hit a break of 71 - the second highest anywhere in the league this term - in his victory over Alan Sherry, and Richard Lillie followed that up by beating Dominic Spiteri to put Acomb 2-0 up.

Malton hit back with wins for Dan Pawson over Keith Thornhill and Phil Hart against Roland Cox.

But Paul Holmes beat Steve Beal and, with a walkover as Malt again failed to field a full team, Acomb went 4-2 up.

Steve Pawson toppled Mick Borg, the league's leading player lost only his second match, but it was not enough for the Malton side.

Fulford 'A' needed a big win against Bootham 'B' to close the gap but could only manage a 4-3 victory.

Glen Mountain got Fulford off to a good start, beating Paul Mahoney, but Paul Scorfield and Matt Smith for Bootham proved too good for Tom Lewis and Sam Parkinson respectively.

The next three frames all went to Fulford as Sam England beat John Wortley, Alan Reed won the battle of the captains against Ian Robinson and Andy Marshall, with a 51 break, beat Paul Powell.

But Lionel Barnes won the last frame for Bootham against Sam Wass, leaving Fulford's title hopes hanging by a thread.

Acomb 'B' had another good win, beating Bootham 'A' 4-3 to maintain their challenge to be the 'B' team champions.

Jeff Winter (25 break) led the way against Tim Fillingham, Jeff Brown levelling as he defeated Nick Goodacre.

Kevin Ventress and Brian Henry beat Barry Rankin and Nick Parker respectively, and, although Rob Barron and Stuart Martel won their frames for Bootham, Jon Milner's win over Colin Robinson gave Acomb the spoils.

Heworth ‘A’ saw off Heworth ‘B’ 5-2.

Ian Strickland put the ‘B’ team ahead as he beat Nick Dyson but victories for Kevin Gall over Dave Beattie, Jordan Worobec against Andi Ireland, and Gary Douglas over John Sherlock put the ‘A’ team in front.

Pete Henderson hit back, defeating Keith Watkinson, but Clive Whyte and Steve Burdett beat Joe Bedford and Simon Whitely to wrap up the ‘A’ team victory.
