THE first-ever junior inter-district mixed golf match in Yorkshire ended in an honourable draw.

York and Harrogate met at Bedale Golf Club for the historic clash, which saw the teams emerge locked together at 3-3 following a day of battle.

The match, which was the brainchild of outgoing York Union of Golf Clubs president Martin Greaves, saw teams of 12 – six girls and six boys – from each organisation play a fourball betterball format.

York won the first three matches but Harrogate rallied to win the final three and share the trophy after the inaugural games. The latter will keep the cup, donated by York printing firm Reprotech Studios, until the two teams meet again in 12 months' time.

Yorkshire Union president Jonathan Plaxton was among the many spectators for an encounter which Greaves hopes will break new ground.

“We will have a return fixture next year at Malton & Norton Gold Club and the aim is to really get the other Yorkshire unions involved with a view to establishing a girls and ladies IDU team,” he said.

“It was absolutely superb. This has been a real highlight of my year as York president. It is a piece of history and the result was fair on the day.

"To see the kids' faces as they came off - whether they had won or lost - was great. It was a really cracking day."
