A LAST ditch goal rescued a 1-1 draw for City of York Hockey Club men's firsts against Durham University 2 in the North Hockey League premier division.

Mike Carter's drag flick from a penalty corner saw the spoils shared at Huntington School in a match played in bitterly cold and windy conditions.

It was a classic game of two halves and City, at first, took the initiative. They controlled possession and worked tirelessly to create opportunities - twice troubling the Durham keeper with powerful reserve stick efforts.

The best chance of the half for City came from a Carter drag flick at a short corner but his effort was superbly matched by the Durham keeper. York limited Durham to very few break away chances.

Durham came flying out of the blocks in the second period. City lost some of the composure that had made them so solid in the opening period but Durham were unable to create many clear-cut chances.

They scored, though, when some poor marking from City allowed a Durham forward space in the York circle. His initial effort was well saved by Luke Brownlee, but the ball fell for another forward to tap the ball in at the back post.

York worked hard to get back into the match and, with time running out, they broke quickly from the back line and found Danny Ellwood. His pinpoint pass to Cockram saw the latter attack the Durham circle with only two defenders and the keeper to beat.

He got past the first but was fouled on his way past the second and won a short corner. With the final whistle having gone, Carter's drag flick from the top of the circle powered past the Durham defence and into the goal.

City of York 3 gained revenge over a Worksop side that had beaten them earlier in the campaign - taking a 5-0 victory in Yorkshire League division two.

Jack Fletcher opened the scoring with a deft deflection from Al Herriots' assist and Pat Herriot notched the second with a thunderous strike. York dominated possession and territory and, after Herriot added to his tally, Rob Prentice put the game to bed with the fourth goal.

Herriot completed his hat-trick to round off the rout.
