YORK & District Indoor Bowls Club enjoyed a great weekend - progressing in two national competitions as they moved into the last 16 of the Yetton Trophy by beating Redcar and the quarter-finals of the Egham Trophy by beating South Shields.

In the former the pulled away in a tight game between the tenth and 15th ends where they went from 34-29 up to 56-39 and didn`t look back as they finished 86-56 winners.

At home, Carol Banks, Maureen Walker, Betty Richardson and Sue Allen got off to a good start as they led 8-1 after five ends, though after 12 the visitors had pulled it back to 10-7.

Allen’s side stepped up a gear to win all but two of the remaining ends and finished 22-11.

Joan Jackson, June Clayton, Helen Wood and Carol Instone led 5-3 after five but after ten they were 12-5 down before pulling back to 14-14 with five to play.

All looked lost as they went into the last two ends 19-14 down - but a three gave them hope then a four on the last sealed a 21-19 comeback win.

In Redcar, both teams put in excellent performances.

Dot Kennelly, Sheila Turpin, Melanie Brooke and Linda Harrison controlled their game, only dropping singles as they won 24-7.

Lynda Parker, Sue Kirkpatrick, Zoe Eagles and Helen Walker didn`t fall more than two behind in their game and went into the last two up before having to settle for a 19-19 draw.

York now play South Shields a week on Saturday.

In the Egham Trophy, York put in an excellent performance to beat strong opposition 85-71.

The away teams were on top form.

Hayley Macdonald, Sue Allen, Paul Mooring and Phil Emmerson dropped more than a single on only two ends while picking up twos, and, crucially for the aggregate score, they collected two fours on the 18th and 19th ends to push their score to 24-9 before finishing 24-12.

Nigel Macdonald, Melanie Brooke, Zoe Eagles and John Harris came from 11-9 to have a 14-13 advantage with four ends of a tight game to play and three singles gave them a 17-14 victory.

At home, Alan Vowles, Helen Wood, Helen Walker and Mark Clarke trailed 9-2 after seven ends but four ends later they led 10-9.

They dropped a four then two ends later a single but bounced back, scoring six unanswered shots to lead 18-14 and won 24-20.

Joan Jackson, Carol Instone, Graham Brooke and Dave Stroughair led 9-3 after seven ends dropping ten shots over fours ends saw them trail 25-17.

However, as South Shields threatened to make it a tight finish on aggregate, Stroughair changed a deficit of three into a three for the home side with his last wood so only lost 25-20.

York next play Barwell on February 21.

YORK Knights made it four wins out of four in Yorkshire Over-55s League division two when they beat Selby 77-69, picking up 12 of the 14 points at stake.

John Birch, Ray Wynn, John Butler and Allan May trailed 13-5 but a six on the 15th end, singles on three of the next four and a two on the last saw them nick a 16-15 win.

At home, Charlie Arnett, Doug Mitchell, Trevor Scott and Mike Snowden had the edge in a tight game where only three ends produced a score of more than two.

They won nine of the first 11 to lead 13-2 and thereafter it was a case of ensuring victory and they did just that, finishing 21-12.

Harley Wenham, Alan Potter, Tony Butterfield and Ron Munro led 8-7 after 11 ends but two ends later they were 14-8 down. They won five of the remaining eight ends and at the close lost 19-15.
