YORK Indoor Bowls Club marched on in the Yetton Trophy as they convincingly beat Harrogate 140-54.

They took all four rinks to reach the last 32 stage in the competition and will meet Redcar on January 16.

At home, Joan Jackson, June Clayton, Helen Wood and Carol Instone were in excellent form and had hit 50 by the 18th end - finishing a one-sided game 53-10.

They started with a seven on the first end and scored an eight on the 12th.

Carol Banks, Maureen Walker, Hayley Macdonald and Sue Allen were also in good form as they only lost three of the first 15 ends and led 22-4 on their way to a 33-11 victory.

In Harrogate, Lynda Parker, Sue Kirkpatrick, Zoe Eagles and Helen Walker were 8-7 down after seven ends but came back strongly and finished 31-15 winners.

Dot Kennelly, Betty Richardson, Sheila Turpin and Linda Harrison pulled away every time the home side came close as they came out on top 23-18.

A York team fielding three debutants easily saw off Leeds in the Denny Plate 109-62.

At home, Nigel Macdonald, John Crowe, Malcolm Thompson and Mark Clarke were level at 15-15 with eight ends to play and they won all but one from there on to win 27-17.

Dudley Williams, Alan Smith, Pete Jackson and Stuart Smith took the lead on the third end with a two and kept it to the end for a comfortable 23-14 success.

In Leeds, Alan Vowles, Barry Walker, Malcolm Harrison and Phil Parsons went from 5-0 down to 10-5 up and kept control throughout - scoring 11 shots over the last three ends to win 38-12.

Neal Macdonald, Andy Humphreys, Graham Instone and Tex Stevens were always ahead in their game and, even though they lost five of the remaining seven ends, finished up 21-19 winners.

York now play Harrogate in the next round on Saturday at noon.

York Vikings suffered their first defeat of the season in division one of the Yorkshire Over-55s League.

Despite winning two rinks and drawing another, they lost a close encounter with Hornsea 76-73. At home, Ray Calpin, Alan Clapham, Malcolm Harrison and Malcolm Thompson had a great start as they led 14-3 after only eight ends but they were level at 22-22 in the final end.

The hosts picked up the all-important single.

Alan Vowles, Gordon Walker, Tex Stevens and Geoff Walker were also involved in a tight game, which saw singles scored on all but five ends.

Both teams went into the last tied at 14-14 before the home side picked up a two to win.

In Hornsea, Chris Bishop, Barry Walker, Roger Ford and Phil Parsons won only two out of the opening twelve ends and trailed 13-4.

But the game turned around and they lost only one more, picking up a two on the last to earn a well deserved 16-16 draw.

Dave Dale, Andy Humphreys, Jim Robertson and Graham Instone played well and led 16-13 before the home side came back, winning six of the remaining eight ends to take the game 24-18.

York play Scarborough in the North East Ladies League on Saturday at noon while, the following day, York play New Earswick in the Egham Trophy (10am). York IBC host the Civil Service Regional Singles qualifying games for the national finals next April on Sunday, starting at 10am.
