YORK could once again witness a record breaking Betway UK Championship as the snooker gets under way tomorrow.

World Snooker, organisers of the game's second biggest tournament and the first triple crown event of the season, says advance ticket sales are on a par with massive numbers last year, which saw more than 5,000 snapped up by fans of the green baize.

The interest, achieved without the participation of the tournament's defending champion Ronnie O'Sullivan, who has opted not to compete, have delighted chiefs ahead of the first balls being potted at the York Barbican this afternoon.

Ivan Hirschowitz, World Snooker spokesman, said: "We are delighted to be on a par with last year at this stage. Hopefully, walk-ups will be strong and we will have an opportunity to break a record we set last year.

"We are looking forward to it. Over the past two or three years we have seen some fantastic stories and, apart from the World Championship, these are the best 12 days of the year."

The tournament runs until December 6. Availability for the first session of the final, the semi-finals and other sessions is very limited. To book, log on to www.worldsnooker.com/tickets or call 0844 854 2757.
