RYEDALE hot potter Jonathan Marwood is continuing his rapid rise up the global billiards rankings - following an impressive display at the World Championships, writes Dominic Pembroke.

The head of PE at Easingwold School was up to number 25 in the world prior to his performance at the Northern Snooker Centre in Leeds - and has since been moved up to number 12.

The championships saw the Harome resident comfortably improve on his 2014 round-of-32 finish.

This time around, Marwood excelled in the long-game format - the 150-up event, where players play to a set amount of 150-point games - claiming a last-eight spot and a clash with familiar foe David Causier.

Marwood ultimately lost out to the tournament’s eventual winner, who had also ended his run 12 months earlier.

Causier notched breaks of 97, 55, 147 and 151, all unfinished, in a remarkable run of scoring, showing exactly why he is now the best in the world.

Marwood, who plays for Harome in the Ryedale League and Harrogate Conservative Club in the Harrogate & District League, put up a good battle with his own 68 break not quite proving enough to clinch a frame.

Despite that, it was an encouraging display from the Ryedale man, who had stormed into the last eight by racking up 17 frames without reply.

The talented cueman also chalked up a vastly improved performance in the timed format of the competition.

There, he battled into the last 16 before a superb high break of 303 from opponent Phil Mumford halted his progress.

Marwood will be aiming to pocket more ranking points in upcoming events, with the world’s top 10 now firmly in his sights.

The clash of the two top teams in the York Carlsberg Conservative Clubs' Billiard League, meanwhile, ended in a 3-3 draw.

Acomb won 3-2 on frames but lose the aggregate point against Heworth 691-642. The latter's Carl De Pasquale played excellent billiards as he defeated Paul Holmes by 60 points - despite a 34 break from his opponent.

Gary Rogers, with breaks of 104 and 66, had a good victory over Mick Borg for Heworth but Dan Potter beat Darren Clark (58 break) to level the match before De Pasquale gave Heworth an 86 lead on points.

Acomb then won the last two frames as Richard Lillie beat Brian Birch and Kevin Ventress defeated Keith Watkinson but they were unable to pull back the aggregate difference.

Bootham entertained Fulford but found themselves 2-0 down as Tom Wilson saw off Paul Mahoney and Glen Mountain pipped Alf Appleby by a mere three points.

They then won the last three frames, and also the aggregate point, to win 4-2.

Captain Ian Robinson led the way beating Wayne Puleston, Tim Fillingham finished strongly to beat Terry Ward and Colin Robinson, with a 35 break, saw Bootham home with victory over Alan Reed.
