CITY of York Hockey Club's men's first team endured a third North League premier division game without a win as they were pegged back in a 2-2 draw with Brooklands II at Huntington School.

City pressure paid off when forward Alex Cockram jabbed the ball away from a defender to fellow City forward Tim Silcock.

He returned it to Cockram who beat the last man and hammered home.

They went close to a second several times, finally getting it when the midfield won the ball back allowing Freddie Heijbroek to drive into the circle. His miss-hit shot wrong-footed defenders and teed up Cockram to score at the back post.

However, City's concentration again dropped, allowing Brooklands score before half-time.

City were on top in the second half as Brooklands were reduced to 10 then nine men. But chances went begging and the visitors equalised on the counter.

City sought a winner but lacked composure and couldn't find the opening, yet another draw leaving them eighth in a tight table.

Struggling City of York II returned to losing ways with a 6-2 reverse at second-placed Stockton.

City weathered the initial storm but were punished by the division's top scorers in a 15-minute salvo.

Stockton, looking for former Harrogate national league man Sean Wilson as often as possible, converted a penalty corner.

Then Wilson's cross-shot was deflected in, before Wilson created a third after a quick counter.

City, keeping possession better, pulled one back through man-of-the-match Rob Newton. But Stockton countered well for a 4-1 interval lead.

City's press was more effective in the second half, with midfield trio Newton, brother and debutant Pete Newton and Tom Pyman having a bigger influence. But Stockton remained a threat on the counter and scored twice more before Chris Dutton bagged a consolation.

A tricky Yorkshire League division two fixture at Thirsk & Old Malton I saw City of York III lose 4-2.

City began brightly but could not find a finish and were punished on the break. Elliot Walker made a great save from a short corner to keep it 1-0, and York equalised when good interplay down the left set up Rob Prentice.

But Thirsk struck back, turning the ball over and creating an overload to score. A third goal followed despite last-ditch defending.

York pulled one back against the run of play as Joe Lancaster set up Russ Bowry at the top of the 'D'. His shot was saved but Jonathan Kilmartin forced the ball home.

York got in the ascendency but a poor ball across the back line was stolen and Thirsk made it 4-2.

City of York IV went two up against Hull II through Danny Vaughan and Ben Foster - but lost 4-2.

Meanwhile, a mixed team of York III and IV players lost 5-0 to Rotherham I, who are doing well in division one.

York, with an unfamiliar formation, started shakily and fell 1-0 down. They rallied and, after switching to 4-4-2 after the break, had chances. However, they weren't taken and Rotherham punished them with a second.

The South Yorkshire side went down to 10 men due to dissent but kept possession well and scored thrice more as York got frustrated.

Goals flowed as City of York V, despite changes in personnel, beat Boston Spa III 7-4 in division four north.

Spa - whose vocal nature brought two green cards - took an early lead but Pip Cook put York 2-1 up at half-time.

Keith Wilson (2) and Tony Brimble made 5-1 before Spa twice hit back. A well-taken goal from George Good upped the lead but the opposition again replied.

Jack Harrington finished a flowing move to settle nerves and, set up by Good, he completed the scoring late on.

City of York VI lost 3-1 in the rain at Halifax II in division five north.

City dominated the first half and a great build-up was finished in style by James Wickham for a deserved lead, but they did not capitalise on further pressure and the hosts equalised.

In a more even second half, City's defence was twice breached.

Lowly City of York VII notched their first win of term as they beat Halifax IV 3-1 thanks to goals by Simon Downe, Matt Besford (2) and frantic late defence as Fax sought a leveller.

Meanwhile, City of York Ladies II secured a battling 2-2 draw against Leeds University II.

York took the lead after a spectacular dribble by Tamsin Collinridge ended with Alice Wilson sweeping the ball home.

The students scored either side of half-time, but Eleni Andromidas converted a penalty corner five minutes from time.

City of York Ladies III beat Northallerton 4-2 with goals by Rebecca Kearney, Emma Bennett, Liz Armitage (2).

Jess Hall starred in defence.
