YORK Indoor Bowls Club, who won the Yetton Trophy in 2013-14 and were beaten semi-finalists last season, started this season’s campaign with an 85-63 victory against North Cave, winning three of the four rinks.

At home, Carol Banks, Maureen Walker, Betty Richardson and Sue Allen had a slender 5-4 lead after five ends before taking control of their game to lead 16-5 seven ends later.

Despite losing four of the last five ends, they had their game under control and finished with a 23-14 victory.

Joan Jackson, who was replaced due to injury by Dot Hill after seven ends, June Clayton, Helen Wood and Carol Instone found themselves 11-9 down after 14 ends but won all but two of the remaining ends to finish winning 19-13.

Away, Dot Kennelly, Sheila Turpin, Melanie Brooke and Linda Harrison got off to a great start, only losing four out of the opening 13 ends to lead 15-4 on their way to a 22-14 victory.

Lynda Parker, Sue Kirkpatrick, Zoe Eagles and Helen Walker also got off to a good start as they led 14-3 after ten ends before losing eight of the next nine to trail 22-17, eventually losing 22-21.

York now play Selby in the next round next Saturday.

York’s Yorkshire League teams continued their unbeaten starts to the season.

In division one, York beat champions Featherstone 80-75, picking up 11 points, and, in division three, York beat Doncaster 108-53, collecting all 14 points.

In the former, both of York's home rinks led 7-1 with both away teams leading 5-4 after five ends.

Featherstone came back and, with four ends to play, went ahead 73-72 when their home rinks had finished, but York scraped home.

At Thanet Road, Alan Vowles, Mike Parker, Stuart Smith and Phil Emmerson, having led 7-1, fell behind as they dropped a six then a single only to recover straight away by scoring seven shots over the next two ends. They didn’t relinquish the lead again and won 26-21.

Neal Macdonald, Graham Instone, Phil Herridge and Paul Mooring led 12-4 after 11 ends but went into the last 16-15 down. With Mooring to play he put his first wood on the jack, which remained there and secured his rink a 16-16 draw.

In Featherstone, Dudley Williams, Chris Bishop, Tex Stevens and Graham Brooke soon adjusted to the pace of the carpet as they won eight out of ten ends to go from 4-2 down to lead 16-8 after 13. Importantly for the aggregate score, they won three of the last four ends, scoring six shots to one to come away with an impressive 24-14 victory.

Nigel Macdonald, Malcolm Thompson, Phil Parsons and Dave Stroughair were 6-5 ahead before losing five ends to trail 17-6. This run proved decisive as they lost 24-14.

York’s division three team led 34-7 on aggregate after only five ends with Alan Potter, Wally Darbyshire, Eric Hodgson and Geoff Walker leading 11-0 after four ends and only losing five ends throughout to finish with a 35-12 victory.

Harley Wenham, Ron Munro, Alan Clapham and Mal Bulmer led 20-3 after 12 ends on their way to a 26-12 victory.

In Doncaster, John Birch, John Butler, Gordon Walker and Tony Hopcutt also had their game virtually won by the half-way stage as they led 22-3 and finished 28-11.

Derrick Clarke, Alan Yoward, Ken Robinson and Jim Robertson had a tougher game. They led 9-7 after eight, trailed 14-9 after 12, later led 16-14, then trailed 18-17 with two ends to play before picking up two singles to give the team the maximum points.

Tomorrow, York, who will host the Top Club semi-finals and final on April 30, travel to Hornsea for their first round game, starting at noon. Next Wednesday, York 'A' team play North Cave 'A' in the Mason Trophy, starting at 12.30pm.
