A FAB four of North Yorkshire athletes have brought home the county's first national title from a prestigious combined competition in more than two decades.

Lucy Hadaway, Alice Linaker, Mollie Newton-O'Brien and Samantha Baker Jones triumphed at the National English Schools Combined Events final in Bedford.

Competing over two days in the 80 metre hurdles, high jump, shot putt, long jump, javelin and 800m, the City of York Athletic Club girls, all aged 15, were lying in second place - behind Greater Manchester - after the first day.

Excelling in the long jump and javelin moved the girls to the top of the podium positions and Newton-O'Brien pulled out a brilliant run in the 800m to take the title with a new championship record of 13,172 points.

The last time a team from North Yorkshire took the title was in 1994.

Hadaway finished fifth overall, Newton-O'Brien was eighth, Linaker ninth and Baker Jones 33rd.
