A RECORD performance saw James Cass bag the York Union of Golf Clubs' Junior Championship.

The Fulford youngster shot a six-under-par 66 as he totally dominated a rain-shortened event at Aldwark Manor Golf Club.

Played over one round because of the wet conditions, Cass still destroyed a talented field. Reaching the turn in 31 - four under par - he produced another three birdies before recording his solitary blemish when bogeying the par five 15th.

Club mate Ben Plaxton took second place with a fine 73, while Sandburn Hall's Ciaran Matthews was a short further back in third on 74.

Nett prizes were also handed out to Pike Hills' Alfie Atkinson (71) and Scarthingwell's Adam Pearson (72).

Joining an honours list which includes the likes of six-time European Tour winner Simon Dyson, Cass also broke the Aldwark course record - his score two shots better than the previous low of 68 held by Russ Chilton.

And, saluting a career-best round, Cass, who is competing in the Yorkshire Amateur Championships at Fulford, said: "I played really well. I struck it well. I holed a lot of putts and I think that was the main thing. They dropped and you needed to be hitting them firm and true. I knew that if I played my game it should be good enough to win and, thankfully, it was.

"Four birdies on the front nine really helped and I had a couple early in the back nine. It was just steady golf. I didn't really do much wrong - one bogey all day and I missed a short birdie putt on 17 - and it could have been better.

"It was the lowest round I have had and probably the best I have played, particularly with the conditions and I am pleased with the way I hit it."

He added: "It's brilliant. It is my last year (as a junior) and it is one that I did set my sights on. I wanted to try and play well. David (Hague) won it last year and he has moved on now so to follow in the same tracks as him would be good."
