HOLGATE produced a remarkable recovery to beat defending champions Clarence 'C' and win the Cup final of the John Smith's Triples Competition.

Clarence looked to be coasting to an easy victory when going 9-1 up after four ends but, straight away, Holgate skip Pete Jackson trailed the jack to give his team three shots and put them back in the game.

Shortening the jack length, Holgate proceeded to win the next few ends and, by the 12th, were leading 19-10. Clarence didn't score again until the 15th, when they laid two, but the game was well and truly lost and Holgate ran out comfortable seven shot winners.

The Plate final was a much closer affair.

Holgate were 4-2 up after four ends but Tramways scored five on the fifth to go into a 7-4 lead. At the half-way stage of the game, Tramways were still in the driving seat - leading 10-5 - but, four ends later, Holgate had drawn level at 12 points all.

The game was still tied at the 15th, but Tramways won the last three ends - scoring two points on each - to take the Plate by five shots.

After taking maximum points from Acomb and St Clements in their last two games, Holgate won the Evening League Champions trophy to add to the Afternoon League.

While Clarence could only draw with both Burton Lane and Acomb in their last two games, Railway Institute keep the pressure on to be runners-up with 8-0 victories over Tramways and Poppleton Road. Meanwhile, South Bank who have been anchored at the bottom of the league all season, managed to gain their first win of the season over near neighbours and rivals St Clements.

Holgate took the Afternoon League crown after beating South Bank, while Railway Institute lost their game against St Clements. That victory means the two will now have to compete in a play-off to decide who earns the runners-up award.
