RIVALS York and Leeds shared the spoils when the teams met in golf’s Inter District Union league at Sand Moor GC.

With a number of the outfit’s more experienced players again not available for selection, York skipper Russ Chilton once more looked to the junior ranks to help make up the numbers.

The morning foursomes didn’t get off to a good start with Martin Brown (Pike Hills) and Damon Coulson (Fulford) losing 5&4 to David Appleyard and Simon Coumbe in the opening match. Chilton (Pike Hills), paired with Chris Lone, recovered from a bad start to win 3&2.

York forged ahead, winning the next two matches, and Fulford pair Charlie Thornton and James Cass also grabbed a half, as they led by two points going into the afternoon singles.

Brown recovered from his morning loss to take the first singles match against fellow county player David Appleyard on the final green. The next three matches all went to Leeds, but Craig Smith (Fulford) put more points on the board for York with his 3&2 win.

The games went to and fro. Cass won 4 & 2, Thornton added a 3&2 win to his morning half and Mattie Heels (Fulford) followed up his fine singles win against Teesside with a 4&3 victory here.

David Hague (Malton & Norton) fought hard to gain a point with a half against Dan Bradbury, which took York to 18 points and a guaranteed halved match.

But Leeds collected the two points they needed to match York’s total.York are now in second place in the table and face Halifax & Huddersfield away at Bradley Hall next, where a win will see them go back to the summit.
