YORK Union of Golf Clubs’ Inter-District Union team got their season off to a perfect start with a 25-11 victory over Teesside at Pike Hills Golf Club.

Both teams were missing players and York captain Russ Chilton pulled on his shoes to complete the line-up for the North Yorkshire outfit. Their strength in depth, though, came to the fore.

It was a result that shot them to the top of table on aggregate difference, after rivals Bradford picked up 21 points and Sheffield 20.

Despite the final score, the games were close.

One of the six foursomes matches was halved, with three others all decided on the 18th in favour of York.

Adrian Lount and Olly Adamson, playing on their own course, were five up after seven holes but were pulled back and finally picked up the victory after halving the last to win one up.

The afternoon singles also featured four matches finishing on the final hole – three in favour of York with one going to Teesside.

James Duckett (The Oaks) and Will Pepper (Fulford) both recorded fine 5&4 wins, and Oliver Adamson’s (Pike Hills) 6&5 success was the quickest victory of the day.

Mattie Heels (Fulford) was called in from the junior squad to make up the numbers and showed grit to win his match on the last hole.

Next up is Leeds Union at Sand Moor on June 14.
