BISHOPTHORPE claimed a 60-48 victory against Dunnington to go top of division two in the Fulford Ladies Invitation Tennis League.

They lead the way on alphabetical order ahead as they are on equal points and games difference with Dunnington and David Lloyd, who beat Appleton Roebuck.

Boston Spa continue to chase after a comprehensive 70-38 win over bottom club Pocklington, which included the weekend’s top score of 33 games from Lesley Bowling and Lorraine Pearey.

The top two teams in divison five both suffered defeats.

Leaders Bubwith lost 66-42 at Bishopthorpe 2, while Wigginton 2 were downed by a consistent performance from all three Dunnington couples, resulting in a 70-38 victory.

Despite a 27-game haul from Natalie Muir and Kim Lees, Stamford Bridge were unable to prevent Fulford 3 from claiming their first win of the season.

Fulford 2 and Wistow remain unbeaten in division three, the former having a 70-38 triumph at Riccall.

Cliffe went down 56-52 at Wigginton, in spite of a 26-game haul from captain Jane Pemberton and Emma Foster.

Wilberfoss remain top of division six after a resounding 80-28 victory at Dunnington.

High scores by all three couples, including 28 games from Pauline Hull and Christine Thomas, gave Sheriff a colossal 82-26 win against Copmanthorpe, while David Lloyd’s victory over Poppleton moved them up to third.

Wendy Stirke and Louise Lister teamed up to bag 32 games for division one high-flyers York 1 in a comprehensive win against Fulford.

Poppleton stayed in touch after overcoming York 2.

Starbeck recorded their second victory of the campaign, a close 55-53 result against Pocklington.

Castlegarth failed to capitalise on the 23 games scored by Sue Jacklin and Rachel Hill as they lost 59-49 to Dunnington.

Division four leaders David Lloyd narrowly lost to Boston Spa.

Nicola Slater and Margaret Lindley’s 24 games proved to be a significant contribution in Boston’s win.

Copmanthorpe and Tollerton occupy second and third spots after victories over New Earswick and Knaresborough respectively.

Top flight promotion focus for unbeaten York aces

YORK are the only unbeaten team in division two of the IT Sports Mixed Tennis League as they look to secure promotion to the top flight.

After narrowly missing out on promotion last year, they are narrowly ahead of Poppleton, who recorded 67-41 wins at both Rufforth and Fulford.

Hilary Spencer and John Anderson added another two match-winning performances for Poppleton, while third-placed David Lloyd were well led by unbeaten Kath Jackson and Paul Chappel against Bishopthorpe.

The highest scorers of the week were Rebecca and Nick Turnbull, who won 35 games against Wetherby in division one for leaders Poppleton.

Dunnington won their first match of the season, beating York 2 with top scorers Emma Loten and Brad Swainston claiming a 12-0 success.

Sutton-on-Derwent still lead division three adding another two points from the visit of Stillington, with Sutton’s Fiona Lambert and Pete Wilson unbeaten.

Bubwith remain in second place after a close-fought win over Dunnington, first couple Jill Rounce and Mark Harris winning their final rubber 11-1 to seal the victory.

Sherburn achieved their first win, with Rachel Huggins and Tristan Gretton making the difference against Stamford Bridge.

Copmanthorpe are the only unbeaten team in division four after toppling previously unbeaten Dunnington.

Jane Harding and Luke Blackburn won their opener 10-2 and then the unbeaten Julie Wood and Graeme Butcher ensured top spot for Copmanthorpe.

York stay third after a close win at David Lloyd, while Pauline Craddock and Patrick Herriot led Fulford into fourth place with a win against previously unbeaten Wilberfoss.

Kate Jackson and Martin Pinfold helped Rowntree Park keep top spot in division six with a win at previously unbeaten Alne.

Copmanthorpe had a narrow win against Poppleton, led by Ann Hopwood and Luke Blackburn, who started with a 10-2 success.

Rachel Booth and Bob Burbridge out-scored team-mates Sarah Grinnell and Robert Rhodes as Dunnington stayed in second place in division seven after their fixture against Stillington.

Bishopthorpe are now in second place in division eight after a two-game win against Wigginton to maintain their unbeaten record. There was a crucial second round 12-0 win by Jen Hall and Alan Wilkinson.

New Earswick are unbeaten since joining the league in division nine, their latest win including 29 games from Nicky Georgiou and Keith Pearson against Rufforth.
