YORK will have a multiple X factor in the world kick-boxing championships at the end of this year.

No fewer than five fighters from the X Martial Arts Club in Acomb are through to the world summit meeting which is to be staged in the American ‘Sunshine State’ of Florida.

Club founder Luke Burks and fellow instructor Jay Spain are through to the world finals as are three teenagers - 15-year-old Sam Watkinson, of Wigginton, and 12-year-old duo Guy Calpin, who lives on Haxby Road, and Scarborough’s Cole Rochester.

The talented quintet earned their places at the global gathering after striking gold in their respective classes in the European championships at Sheffield Ponds Forge complex much to the delight of Burks, who established the X Martial Arts Club with Spain only 18 months ago.

I used to train with Gary Long at his club in Acomb,” said Burks. “I was there for 12 years competing and then training as an instructor for the last five years alongside Jay before we left.

“It’s great that we now have five going to the world championships. It’s even better for the youngsters to get this sort of opportunity. Going to America to compete at the highest level will help to raise their profile and bring success back.”

The only stumbling block on the horizon is the near £9,000 that needs to be raised to fund the trip for the X aces expedition.

Burks, who is waiting on a hospital operation to discover whether he will be able to compete in Florida or help to prepare the British team, explained how a range of club events had raised close on a quarter of the target with more activities planned.

However, he added: “If there are any firms or companies out there who can help they can phone me on 07515 337641.”
