ECHOES of course records will reverberate around York Golf Club this Sunday.

The York Rose Bowl, the Strensall-based club’s annual scratch open tournament and a key Yorkshire Order of Merit event, takes centre stage at the glorious J H Taylor-designed lowland heath course.

And fans of the top-class tournament will be hoping it reaches the heights of just 12 months ago.

Then, the 35th Rose Bowl was won by Rotherham GC’s Jamie Harrison but only after a sudden-death play-off against George Forder.

He had forced the tense showdown with a majestic 15-foot pressure putt on the 18th green to blast a course record with a 64.

An army of spectators trooped back down the first hole for the play-off, and Harrison finally emerged the winner when Forder missed a short putt to halve the second hole.

Just hours before, eventual Rose Bowl winner Harrison had equalled the course record with a 65 for a two-round tournament best of 134 - six-under-par.

This Sunday’s 36th Rose Bowl - staged in the club’s 125th anniversary year - follows a great deal of recent improvement and lengthening work at the scenic Strensall course.

Standard scratch has been increased from 70 to 71, which means an opportunity to establish a brand new course record.

Spectators are welcome to attend another potential feast, while entry forms can be obtained from the YGC secretary by phoning 01904 491840 or e-mailing info@yorkgolfclub.co.uk .
