JORDAN WOROBEC advanced into the last eight of the York Masters after a fine 3-2 victory over Mick Borg.

Borg’s break of 31 gave him a fast start in the opening frame but Worobec fought back to claim it 61-43 and a 59-30 success in the second put him within touching distance of the quarter-finals.

Borg refused to bow, however, and breaks of 33 and 30 helped to take the match to a decider. Both players had plenty of chances in the last but the tie went down to the black.

Failing to sink a relatively easy pot with the rest, Borg’s miss allowed Worobec to seize his chance.

He will now play last year’s runner-up Dan Potter on the World Snooker standard tournament table in Layerthorpe after the latter dug deep to beat Andi Ireland 3-2.

Ireland dominated the safety battles in the opening frame and took it 68-60 and, although Potter soon levelled, an upset was on the cards when the Heworth potter took a 2-1 lead after the third.

Potter, not at his best, held firm to level the match after a 60-22 victory in the fourth frame and easily won the decider.

Clive Whyte produced the performance of the last 16 - putting together an impressive break of 72 in his 3-0 win over Paul Holmes. He dominated throughout, winning the opener 57-22 and the second 62-31, before putting together his run in the third. Despite running out of position a number of times during the break, Whyte continued to pot some excellent balls. He missed the black for a 79 clearance.

Whtye will play Adam Scaife, who performed well to beat Tim Lister 3-0. The CIU individual champion easily won the opening frame and never looked back.

Tournament favourite Ashley Hugill had to work hard to see off Roland Cox 3-1. Hugill forged in front with the help of a 32 break but Cox levelled after some impressive safety play.

Cox then spurned a great chance to go in front, missing an easy pink, and allowed European Tour player Hugill to take the frame with a break of 31. Struggling to get into his stride, he still went on to win the match after Cox missed a long blue.

Phil Hart now awaits but only after the Malton player first came through a tough 3-2 encounter with Pete Glover. The match went into sudden death after Glover produced a 43 break in the fourth but Hart held his nerve to come through 66-50.

Kevin Gall and Justin Morris will go head-to-head in the other quarter- final. Gall potted blue, pink and black in the final frame to squeeze past Paul Mahoney and Morris beat tournament host Adrian Barraclough 3-1.

Quarter-final draw: Ashley Hugill v Phil Hart, Adam Scaife v Clive Whyte, Jordan Worobec v Dan Potter, Kevin Gall v Justin Morris
