JOAN JACKSON, Melanie Brooke and Carol Instone proved to be too strong for Lynda Parker, Trish Harrison and Maureen Walker in the York Indoor Bowls Club ladies knockout triples final.

Jackson, Brooke and Instone only lost five ends to win 20-5 in the latest of the Thanet Road finals.

Dave Stroughair, Graham Brooke and Paul Mooring had the upper hand in a tight game, which saw no more than a two scored throughout the game, but they led 13-5 having lost only five out of 14 ends before finishing 13-8 winners.

The Gordon Little Trophy was played on a round-robin format and saw Ann Sharpley, Lynn Tattersall and Mike Snowden going into their last game knowing a draw would give them the trophy. However, defeat would give their opponents, Nigel Macdonald, Francis Morrissey and Neal Macdonald, the title.

It looked as though Macdonald’s team had done enough as they led the two-wood triples game 13-9 with four ends to play.

They were rocked by dropping a five but composed themselves to take the lead again with a two, only to be hit by a four then a three to give the trophy to Snowden’s team 21-15.

The Eric Hopwood triples final was between two teams who had played each other in the group stage, which had proved to be a keenly fought game with Noel Cammidge, Barry Walker and Malcolm Harrison winning 19-14.

The final proved to be the opposite as Tony Moore, Dave Dale and Mal Bulmer could not get on the board before the eighth end when they score stood at 12-0.

They won five out of seven ends, but the damage had already been done and Walker’s men took the title 17-6.

John and David Stroughair came from 4-0 down after three ends to go into the last leading 14-11 before Mark Clarke and Alan Vowles gave themselves a great chance as they held four shots.

However, Dave Stroughair came in with his second to last wood to claim the winning shot and to take the men’s Simpson pairs title 15-11.

Helen Walker and Zoe Eagles were dominant in the ladies Simpson pairs as they won all but five ends to beat Lynn Tattersall and Pauline Cooper 24-8.

Maureen Walker and Sheila Turpin were on top form in the ladies Langford pairs as they came from 8-2 down to beat Joan Jackson and Carol Instone 16-12.

Pam Richardson was never behind as she retained the ladies over-55s singles title, but had to withstand a fight back from Pauline Cooper.

She came from 15-5 down to 19-17, only for Richardson to finish the game with a two.

John Jennison, last season’s men’s singles plate runner-up, got off to a great start in this year’s final, leading 17-3, but Neal Macdonald looked to be on course for a comeback as he pulled back to 20-14. However, he dropped the all-important single to lose 21-14.
