TOURNAMENT host Adrian Barraclough reached the last 16 of the York Masters for the first time after an excellent display saw him beat Martin Johnson 3-0.

The event is staged on his World Snooker standard table in Layerthorpe and he took the first frame 66-34 with the help of a 34 break.

Playing disciplined snooker, an 83-42 win clinched the second and he then claimed the match 63-34 in the third.

He will play Justin Morris in the first knockout round, who will need to up his game after losing 3-2 to Nick Marchant in his final group match.

Marchant had to win 3-0 to take the group into a play-off and he started the more positive. But despite being on the back foot for most of the opening frame, Morris managed to take it and secure top spot.

Now unable to qualify, Marchant continued to play some excellent snooker and put in a solid performance to take the match in the deciding frame.

Andi Ireland beat Mark Hodson 3-1 to book a second-round berth.

Having both already lost to Ashley Hugill each had to win to advance.

The first frame was tight with both players unable to build any breaks, despite a number of good opportunities. Ireland eventually won it 45-37, and also took the second 62-50 to move into a 2-0 lead.

Hodson hit back in frame three, upping his game with a number of solid pots to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Despite the mini comeback it was all too late for the South Bank player, with Ireland narrowly taking the match 60-52 in frame four.

Last 16 draw: Justin Morris v Adrian Barraclough; Pete Glover v Phil Hart; Ashley Hugill v Roland Cox; Dan Potter v Andi Ireland; Mick Borg v Jordan Worobec; Kevin Gall v Paul Mahoney; Tim Lister v Adam Scaife; Paul Holmes v Clive Whyte.
