DUNNINGTON sealed their second Yorkshire Squash League premier division title in superb style with a 20-0 victory over Heaton.

The York club bounced back from a surprise 17-7 defeat at home to Queens in their penultimate match to add the 2015 championship to their 2012 success.

Having stumbled against Queens, when they needed only 14 points to clinch the crown, Dunnington put that setback behind them in devastating fashion in Bradford.

World number 23 Chris Simpson, world number 37 Shaun Le Roux, Gareth Lumsden, Matt Marshall and captain Matt Stephenson all registered straight-games victories to earn Dunnington their 14th win of the season from 18 matches.

Queens and Hallamshire had the same number of wins and losses, but the York club finished 18 points clear of Queens, who beat Hull and East Riding 19-3 in their final game to finish 12 points ahead of Hallamshire.

In the Heaton win, Simpson registered an 11-6, 11-9, 11-4 success over Julian Tomlinson, while Le Roux beat Phil Bowker 11-6, 11-8, 11-9.

Lumsden triumphed 11-9, 11-6, 11-7 against Darren King, Marshall bettered Russell Heyes 11-4, 11-9, 11-8, before captain Stephenson recorded the biggest victory, beating Dave Dixon 11-3, 11-4, 11-1.

Fraser Anderson, committee member and club player, said: “For the club, this is a very important success story.

“Although we are a tiny village club with only 200 members, we are very serious about youth development and cultivating the next generation of world-class players.

“We have a first-class club coaching team headed up by head coach Gary Crossland, who is level three England Squash and Racket accredited.

“The presence of our Yorkshire premier team and the ability for club members and juniors to watch regular squash at the highest level is inspirational of all of our emerging talent.

“We have two players in the world top 50 regularly playing in the team. We don’t charge to watch any of the matches, so this represents a rather unique opportunity for anyone interested in squash to visit Dunnington for a great evening out.”

Anderson added: “We pay our professional players a fixed rate per match and some of the cost of this is offset by sponsorship we’ve developed.

“Our sponsors for the Premier League are Concorde BGW, MCE Limited, The Blue Bicycle and RDF building services.”
