GOALKEEPER Brian Ignjatovic was the star man in City of York III’s 2-1 Yorkshire Hockey League division two home win over title-hunting Wakefield.

The visitors capitalised on a slow York start to go in front from a penalty flick after a first-time slap hit Craig Ferguson on the goal-line.

But that spurred on York and, despite being reduced to ten men when Mark Moisley was yellow-carded, Jonathan Trowsdale pounced to drill in the equaliser.

Ignjatovic produced a series of fine saves to fend off Wakefield’s second-half pressure. He was rewarded with two minutes left when a Wakefield defender was penalised and Rob Prentice slotted in the decisive penalty.

That proved the club’s prime match after City of York II’s premier division tussle against against Ben Rhydding II was conceded by the visitors to give York three points.

City of York IV ended their title-winning division three campaign in a 1-0 defeat against Halifax II. A mis-hit shot beat the York keeper, who then battered their opponents without securing a breakthrough.

After leading 3-0 at half time and 4-1 with 20 minutes to go, City of York VI contrived to lose 5-4 at home to Airedale. York’s scorers were Richard Tanner-Smith, Gordon Moore, James Gibbon and Andy Wilson.

City of York ladies III swept to an impressive 3-0 win at Pudsey I with a brace of goals from Rebecca Kearney and a Jo Perryman strike.

In Yorkshire Women’s League division seven north, Lily Rowntree bagged a hat-trick and Caitlin Tore and Zoe Searson were also on target as City of York V beat Selby II 5-1.

Acomb Hockey Club men’s II wrapped up their Yorkshire League division five north term with a healthy 3-1 win at Boston Spa IV.

Skipper Jonny Brown struck twice before Acomb keeper Martin Grainge pawed away a penalty corner in the dying minutes of the first half.

Though Boston scored early in the second half, Tom Whitfield rolled the ball in to seal a sixth-place finish.

The Tangerines’ first team play their final fixture on April 11 at Energise, where a win over Harrogate IV would secure promotion to division three ahead of Tadcaster Magnets.

Acomb ladies crashed 8-0 to Huddersfield Dragons II in their final Yorkshire division two game.
