HEWORTH’S Jordan Worobec beat Fulford’s James Lee 3-0 in the final of the York Conservative Clubs’ Scruton Snooker Cup at Bootham.

The best of five frame final was an exhibition of positive potting and excellent positional play and safety. Worobec made a 40 break early in the first frame to match the tournament’s high break and when he potted the last red he led 56-30 en route to taking a 1-0 lead.

In the second frame, Worobec made breaks of 32 and 31 and Lee conceded the frame with the score at 70-17.

Worobec made a 24 break at his first visit in frame three, followed by a 26 break to lead 50-0. Lee had a chance to get into the match but only scored seven points before missing the blue off its spot, which let Worobec in for another 24 break, increasing his lead to 74-7.

Lee conceded with only the colours remaining to hand Worobec victory in a match which lasted only an hour.

The cup and trophies were presented by Colin Robinson, of the Faber Shield committee, on behalf of sponsor Adrian Barraclough.

Worobec shared the highest break award with Lee and Heworth’s Clive Whyte.

The Fosters Cup final between Bootham’s Matt Smith and Worobec will be played at Fulford on Monday, March 23, at 7.30pm.

Dan pots his way into last 16

DAN POTTER produced a solid display to book his place in the last 16 of the York Masters snooker tournament.

Last year’s runner-up lost the opening frame of his clash with Rob Kettlewell but produced breaks of 44 and 50 to ensure he made it through to the knockout stages once again. Paul Holmes followed him with a 3-0 victory over Jordan Worobec.

The first frame proved pivotal with Holmes recovering from needing snookers to take it on his way to an otherwise straight- forward success. Worobec now plays Rich Lillie in a winner-goes-through Group ‘C’ final fixture.

Group ‘B’ was claimed by Pete Glover after his 3-0 win over Clarence’s Paul Mahoney.

Mahoney looked to be in control of the first frame, having a 22-point cushion with only a few reds left. But, with the miss rule in operation, players are able to gain a high number of points if they are able to get a hard snooker.

Glover was able to take advantage of this after a good shot, which left Mahoney in all kinds of trouble. Mahoney missed five times, putting Glover only two points behind and he finally took the frame 68-51. The next two frames were scrappy, with both players unable to make any decent breaks. However, Glover won them both to top the group. Mahoney now plays Keith Thornhill.

Pete Rivis bowed out of the competition after a 3-1 loss to York RI’s Tim Lister.

Lister, a quarter-finalist last year, made the better start when winning a number of safety battles while also potting some good long shots and a 22 break in frame two put him in control of the match.

Rivis potted a long green and then cleared the table to reduce the deficit but Lister took control of frame four and ran out a 56-29 winner.

Acomb slide to first defeat

CHAMPIONS Acomb suffered their first defeat of the York Conservative Clubs’ Faber Shield Billiards League season as they lost 4-2 at home to Heworth.

Richard Lillie got the hosts off to a good start, winning the first frame 150-133 against Carl De Pasquale.

Gary Rogers hit back, beating Paul Holmes with breaks of 32 and 33.

Mark Winskill then produced a fine performance, breaks of 47, 34 and 31 helping him to defeat Mick Borg (35 break) to put Heworth 2-1 up.

However, John Ashwell levelled by beating Keith Watkinson 150-126 and the final frame saw Brian Birch running out a 150-124 victor over Trevor Ventress, a result that also secured the aggregate point.

Bootham entertained Fulford and went 1-0 down as Jim Lee (27 break) had a 150-110 victory over Matt Smith. However, then Alf Appleby beat Bob Smith 150-135 and Colin Robinson followed up with a 150-112 win over Wayne Puleston.

Paul Mahoney continued Bootham’s winning run, defeating Glen Mountain 150-128 to leave the aggregate score at 560-535 in favour of Bootham. However, Tim Fillingham was unable to stop Alan Reed (23 break) winning 150-115 to give Fulford an aggregate win by ten points to level the match at 3-3.
