PAUL DAVISON dropped only one frame all day as he booked a place in the Snookerbacker Classic Grand Finals.

Playing in a regional heat of the top amateur competition, held at the George Scott Snooker Club in Liverpool, Pickering potter Davison dominated - producing breaks of 110 and 101 as he swept to victory.

Thomas McSorley, Rhys Williams and Josh Mullholland were all dispatched 4-0 before Davison produced an equally convincing display in the final to see off Anthony Jeffers 4-1.

Hailing consistent scoring, that also saw him put together efforts of 83 and 82 as he recorded four of the day’s top ten breaks, the former two-decade tour veteran now moves on to finals day at Gloucester on April 5.

The event, which has seen top snooker talent including multiple women’s world champion Reanne Evans, along with ex-tour professionals Martin O’Donnell and Daniel Wells, taking part, offers more than £7,500 in prize money and is rapidly establishing itself as one of the amateur arena’s top tournaments.

And Davison is delighted to be among the qualifiers who will bid to remove Ant Parsons, who beat the Pickering player in an earlier heat final in Leeds, of the overall crown he won 12 months ago.

“I played quite well and it was nice to get through,” he said. “I was consistent all day and, after having played in qualifiers at Leeds and Derby, I wanted to get through.

“I started off well. I had four breaks over 50 in my first match and, while the second was a bit scrappier, I had a couple of tons in the third and a 60, 70 and 80 in the last. I played pretty well all day and scored pretty heavily. My long potting was good as was my safety.

“The finals are held on Easter weekend and it was a confidence booster. There is no substitute for winning matches. It was also nice to get my hands on a bit of silverware. It has been a while since I won a trophy. I am looking forward to the finals weekend."

Davison almost regained his tour card at the Gdynia Open, the final European Tour event of the season.

After sailing through the amateur stages - enjoying a 4-0 qualifying win over York’s Ashley Hugill in the process, Davison was edged out in a final frame shootout by two-time ranking winner Dominic Dale.

Had he won, he would have faced Michael Georgiou knowing a victory would have put him in the top eight tour finishers - not already with playing credentials - following the six tournament series and would have booked his return to the big time.

Now he will focus on the upcoming amateur play-offs, which sees him and Adam Duffy as the top qualifiers, and the northern stages of the English Amateur Championship as he continues his quest for a two-year tour card.

Davison added: “I practised a lot before Poland and I wanted to give it a good push and try to get at least until the last 32. That would have done it and would have given me a couple of months before the new season starts.

“The finals weekend for the Snookerbacker Classic will see the same sort of players as in the amateur playoffs so it would be nice to get through them before that event.”
