WIRRAL woe signed off City of York Ladies’ first team’s North Hockey League premier division campaign.

In a tough exchange at Neston I on the Wirral, goalkeeper Liz Furber was extended early on, while Frankie Marsh produced several goal-line clearances.

Laura Horne and Holly Millar both went close for York in a blank first half.

The second half saw a more physical game with several York players ending up with injuries just as Neston went in front via a deflection.

But York responded well and got the equaliser after Horne dribbled the ball across the line.

Lorna Harris drove hard along the left to try to force another opening but, after a series of short corners, York were undone by an unfortunate umpiring decision leading to a Neston counter and what proved to be the winner.

Seven-up was the outcome for City of York ladies III, who downed Yorkshire League division two hosts Doncaster 7-0.

Fay Chapman and Kelly Hunter each scored twice with the other strikes shared between Katie Wilson, Rebecca Kearney and Faith Civico, while midfielder Jess Harbord was player of the match and debutant goalkeeper Beth Wilson not ever troubled.

Two goals from Ginette Skelton sealed City of York VI’s win over visiting Epworth I in division four to strengthen their promotion drive.

In division seven north, City of York V beat Leeds University VII 2-1 to edge up a place after goals either side of half-time from Lauren Susnjara and Charlotte Mattock.

A crunch clash between second-placed City of York VI and Halifax ended locked at 2-2.

York showed commendable spirit in twice coming from behind through Rebecca Feetenby and Lily Rowntree, the latter deflecting in a shot from Sarah Davies
