WIN number 14 was a struggle as City of York men’s I edged to a 5-4 win at home to Wakefield II in North Hockey League division one.

The sides were evenly matched for the first ten minutes before Stephen Paterson passed to Alex Cockram to strike the opener.

Wakefield equalised with a smart deflection for the sides to be locked at half-time.

York took the lead after the ball hit a Wakefield foot on the goalline, Alex Cockram converting the resulting penalty flick.

Soon after, Dan Ellwood dived in to deflect the ball in for a 3-1 lead. Again the visitors countered from a short corner, only to spur an Ant Bull goal from a Ben Bull pass to make it 4-2.

The pattern continued with Wakefield profiting from a short-corner. But a rifling shot from Ellwood widened the home advantage before a late fourth from Wakefield.

Early in the second half, both sides were reduced to ten men for fouls but City kept their composure, man of the match Lister finishing off a great solo run for the leveller.

No sooner were both teams back to a full complement than Rotherham’s discipline went awry with two men sin-binned.
