NEW Earswick Indoor Bowls Club ‘A’ were convincing 106-57 winners over Scarborough ‘B’ in Yorkshire League division two.

In the home games, Dennis Ellis, Dave Elcock, Graham Lockwood and skip Mick Head got off to a great start, picking up three threes, two twos and five singles to lead 18-0 after ten ends.

However, they then dropped six shots in the next four ends to lead 18-6 after 14, but got the better of the last seven ends to win 24-8.

In the other home rink, Paul Murray, Colin Ellis, Colin Pickup and Bill Waldie lost the first two ends but fought back to be all square at 8-8 after eight ends.

With the score at 13-9 to New Earswick after 11 ends, the home side raced away, picking up 23 shots against four in the last ten ends to win 36-13.

At Scarborough, Bob Elliot, Dave Kermode, Brian Gray and Andrew Fothergill picked up a seven at the third end to take a 10-1 lead.

Earswick were always between ten to 13 shots in front and went on to win 26-13.

In the final game, Dave Sykes, Dave Clayden, Ralph Tiplady and Barry Johnson led 7-0 after four ends, only to find themselves 8-7 down after seven ends.

The lead kept changing hands but the sides were level at 14-14 after 13 ends. Scarborough took the lead after 16 ends and hung on to win 23-20.

New Earswick took 16 points to Scarborough’s two.

In division three, New Earswick ‘B’ were 88-76 winners over Leeds ‘B’, taking 14 points to Leeds’ four.

Joe Barker, Brian Hardcastle, David Moorhouse and Gordon Storey trailed 5-0 after two ends, but won the next five ends to lead 12-5 after seven.

Earswick picked up a six at the 17th end to lead 24-13 and Leeds then scored ten shots in the next three ends, but Earswick won 25-23 despite winning only nine of the 21 ends.

In the other home leg, Gordon Fratson, Barrie Shipley, John Snowden and Kevin Potter led 19-4 after 14 ends before winning 24-12.

At Leeds, both games were close.

Terry Bellwood, Barry Cooper, Dave Hutchinson and Brian Birch led 12-3 after eight ends, but Leeds won five of the next six to be 13-13 up after 14 ends.

Earswick then scored seven shots at the next three ends to lead 20-13 and held on to win 20-19.

Vic Thompson, Pat Inwood, Bruce Dobson and Gary Jones were neck and neck before taking a four-shot lead at 16-12 after 17 ends, but they dropped ten shots in the next three ends to lose 22-19.

LINE OF VISION: New Earswick 'A's Dennis Ellis in action

TWO years unbeaten in the Yetton Trophy continued for York Indoor Bowls Club who secured a quarter-final place after beating Cumbria 76-64.

York always had the slight advantage at the crucial stages - leading 22-15 after five ends, 35-32 after ten, 55-45 after 15 and 66-55 with three ends to play.

Joan Jackson, June Clayton, Helen Wood and Carol Instone led the way only losing six ends throughout their game including winning six of the last seven to triumph 25-8.

Dot Kennelly, Sheila Turpin, Sue Tomlinson and Linda Harrison had a good opening half, leading 15-4 after ten ends. While they were briefly pegged back they came good again to win 20-18.

Hayley Macdonald, Betty Richardson, Melanie Brooke and Sue Allen were involved in a close game before losing 18-15 after conceding a three on the last end.

Carol Banks, Lynda Parker, Zoe Eagles and Helen Walker roared back from a 19-8 deficit before eventually losing 20-16.

York now play Lincoln on Saturday, February 14 on a home and away basis.

York’s Vivienne Trophy quarter-final tie against County Arts (Norwich) has been arranged for Thursday, February 5, at Stamford IBC starting at noon.

On the same day, York play Cumbria in the Mason Trophy last 16 at Darlington IBC, starting at 12.30pm.

Meanwhile, York IBC’s North East League team moved off the bottom after their first win of the season by beating title favourites Selby.

Away, both teams put up excellent performances.

Pam Richardson, Maggie Pal - lister, Tina Robinson and Pat Potter surged from 13-12 to go 29-13 ahead before sealing an impressive 31-15 victory, while Michelle Ellis, Doreen McCowan, Janet McManus and Pauline Cooper put won 22-17.

At home, Audrey Micklethwaite, Dot Hill, Pauline Armitage and Barbara Dawson saw an 8-0 lead peter out to a 17-15 deficit only to stage a revival and cement a 26-17 win.

Maureen Robinson, Sue Jeffrey, Jean Williams and Pat Bracken never truly recovered from a 15-1 deficit to eventually lose 26-15.
