A CHAMPIONSHIP best time of 21.29 seconds saw sprint starlet Tom Somers retain his Northern Indoor Championship Under-20s men’s 200 metre title in style.

The City of York Athletic Club teenager also scooped the 60m crown - in a time of 6.84 seconds - as athletes at the Huntington Stadium-based club bagged a haul of medals.

Chelsea Walker won the U20s 400m in 57.77 seconds and took bronze in the 60m hurdles in 8.98 seconds. Both were personal bests.

Scott Lincoln moved to number one in the UK rankings this year as he opened his indoor campaign with a throw of 16.86m to win the senior shot put. Club-mate Henry Fairclough took silver in the U17s men’s shot with 14.76. He was fourth, with 13.55m, in the U20s age group.

Alex Botterill, 15, took the U17s men’s 800m prize with an effort of two minutes 2.22 seconds and Lucy Hadaway was the U17s girls’ long jump champion thanks to a leap of 6.62m.

Ella Eadon ran a great 800m to finish second in 2-18, Sarah Parsons was sixth in the women’s shot put with a new personal best, Kristopher Wong was seventh in the U17s men’s 60m final, Isobel Avey was sixth in the U17s women’s 300m, Charlotte Stamp was sixth in the U17s women’s hurdles and Emily Dutton was sixth in the U20s 60m.

All the athletes will be competing again in the National Indoor Championships next month in Sheffield.

Richard Buck, meanwhile, is part of the Great Britain and Northern Ireland squad for the Sainsbury’s Glasgow International Match this weekend.

The 28-year-old former Pickering schoolboy has been selected for the 4x400m relay squad along with Conrad Williams, who captains the GB side, Rabah Yousif, Elliot Rutter and Jarryd Dunn.

Commonwealth Games heptathlon bronze medallist Jessica Taylor also dons GB colours over the weekend when she competes in the Combined Events International Indoor Match at Apeldoorn in the Netherlands.

The former COYAC junior has been selected as part of the senior women’s side in a clash against the host country, France, Spain and the Czech Republic.

She comes into the event in fine form, having finished second in the National Pentathlon Championships behind winner Karla Drew in Sheffield earlier this month.
