ACOMB ‘A’ moved a point clear at the top of the York Conservative Clubs’ Carlsberg UK Snooker League with a 4-3 victory at title rivals Bootham ‘B’.

The visitors started in fine style, forging into a 3-0 lead through Roland Cox, Dan Potter and Keith Thornhill, who recorded a 26 break.

Andy Proud got Bootham on the board, but Phil Carlton secured the win for Acomb before Paul Powell and Lionel Barnes narrowed the deficit.

Heworth ‘A’ moved level with Fulford ‘A’ in third place in the table with a 4-3 victory over six-man Bootham ‘A’.

Gary Douglas won the opener for Heworth, but Bootham responded with wins from Mark Darley and John Darley.

Black ball wins for Mark Winskill and Nick Dyson edged Heworth back in front and, although Barry Rankin got the better of Clive Whyte, a walkover for Steve Burdett clinched the match.

Malton ‘A’ are fifth in the table but a 5-2 victory over bottom side Heworth ‘B’ leaves them well placed with at least one game in hand on all their rivals.

The first four frames of the match were shared, with wins for Malton’s Simon Weatherill and Roger Ward cancelled out by Heworth’s Andi Ireland and John Sherlock.

Malton then took control, cruising home with wins for Dominic Spiteri, Steve Beal and Phil Hart, who hit a break of 44.

The match between Acomb ‘B’ and Fulford ‘B’ followed the same pattern, with the first four games shared before Fulford stormed to a 5-2 success.

Jim Rollinson and Bob Smith won for Fulford, but it was 2-2 thanks to victories for Acomb’s Jeff Winter (20 break) and Brian Henry.

Andy Ogley beat Steve Rodgers on the black before Fulford’s win was wrapped up by Andy Hurley and Nigel Smith.

Three players are leading the way in the Worthington player of the year race, with Thornhill, Beal and Spiteri all on five wins from five matches.

Acomb’s Mick Borg is next with five wins from six outings.

Whyte continues to head the Pasema Paving highest break standings with his break of 68, with Malton’s Lee Taylor second with a 58.
