DEFENDING Yetton Trophy champions York Indoor Bowls Club were made to fight all the way by Selby on their way to an 86-71 victory.

Carol Banks, Lynda Parker, Zoe Eagles and Helen Walker’s away rink kept the aggregate scores close early on as they led Cynthia Wright’s side 16-4 after seven ends, thanks to a seven on the fifth end.

They extended the lead to 25-7 after 14 ends and finished with a 31-13 victory.

Dot Kennelly, Sheila Turpin, Sue Tomlinson and Linda Harrison got off to a slow start against Sue Williamson’s side as they trailed 9-3 after nine ends.

They were still behind at 15-7 after 16 ends, but took the lead with a four, a three, then a two, only to be outdone by the home side with a single then a four.

At Thanet Road, Joan Jackson, June Clayton, Helen Wood and Carol Instone began well, leading Jane Simpson’s team 11-4 after ten ends.

Then as the aggregate scores were getting close, they scored an important four, followed by a three on the last two ends to win 23-12.

Hayley Macdonald, Betty Richardson, Melanie Brooke and Sue Allen found themselves 13-4 down to Carol Sarvent's team after eight ends.

They got themselves back into the game but the damage had already been done and they lost 26-16.

The Thanet Road club will play Scarborough in the next round a week on Saturday.

In the Egham Trophy, York got off to a flying start, leading 40-7 on aggregate as they went on to beat Huddersfield 108-61, with four winning rinks.

At home, Macdonald, Melanie Brooke, Graham Brooke and Paul Mooring led 11-1 after only seven ends and only lost four more before dropping a five on the last as they won easily 33-15.

Jackson, Instone, Phil Parsons and Dave Stroughair made sure of their game between the sixth and ninth ends where they scored 11 shots without reply to take a 17-3 lead.

Their opponents conceded with three ends to play when the other three rinks had finished, making the final score 25-18.

Away, Banks, Allen, Stuart Smith and Adam Liddell were in excellent form and only dropped more than a single on one end as they won comfortably 30-9.

Eagles, Nigel Macdonald, Walker and John Harris were involved in a close game where they picked up singles on the last three ends to win 20-19.

York play Hornsea in the next round on November 30, at 10am.

York 'B' went out of the EIBA Over-60s Double Rinks when they lost 40-29 to a strong North Cave team.

Alan Potter, Dave Clayton, Chris Bishop and Bob Blackburn won five of the last six ends to go from 13-10 down to win 17-14.

Away, Charlie Arnett, Ron Munro, Alan Clapham and Ken Robinson put up a good show and had pulled themselves back into their match going from 15-5 down to 17-12, only to lose the last five ends and their game 26-12.

Tomorrow at noon, York 'A' complete their Yorkshire Over-55s League division one fixture when they play their home leg against Redcar having played the away rinks today.

On Saturday, York take on Huddersfield in the Denny Cup, at noon.

York’s next game in the Mason Trophy against North Cave has been arranged for next Friday, starting at 12.30pm.

Yorkshire, last season’s beaten finalists, overcame their tricky first round game in the EIBA Over-60s Liberty Trophy when they beat Nottinghamshire 138-99 on aggregate.

They won four of the six rinks and now play Cumbria in the next round.

Graham Brooke’s rink, which included fellow York member Phil Parsons, went from 4-2 down after five ends to lead 12-6 after ten on their way to a 25-15 victory.

Redcar's Alan Jones also had a winning rink as his side came from 14-12 down after 15 ends to finish 19-15.

Hornsea player Ian Paddy’s side got off to a slow start where they trailed 14-7 after ten ends but they got back into their match and only went down 23-17.

The home leg was played at Featherstone and saw John Whiteley's side come from 8-0 down after five ends to win 30-13.

Tony Horobin's side were on top from the start and won 32-15, though Ralph Hodgkinson's side lost 18-15.
