YORK started their Mason Trophy campaign with a 51-24 victory over Huddersfield after winning both rinks.

York, last season’s beaten semi-finalists, started well in the away leg as Dot Kennelly, Maureen Walker, Helen Walker and Linda Harrison led 10-0 after only five ends.

They kept the margin throughout and finished winning 26-10.

At home, Joan Jackson, Carol Banks, Melanie Brooke and Carol Instone also made the most of a good start which saw them leading 12-4 after only five ends.

By the 15th end, the difference had been reduced to three shots at 16-13 before the home side pulled away to lead 25-14 with two ends to play when the game was conceded.

York now play North Cave in the next round.

York had another team playing in the Mason Trophy, but they lost 48-32 to Harrogate.

The home side of Tina Robinson, Joyce Gee, Betty Richardson and Sheila Turpin led 9-3 after five ends and 18-14.

Then, chasing the aggregate score, they dropped a four then a five before picking up a five on the last end to lose 24-23.

Away, Maureen Robinson, Jenny Darrell, Pat Potter and Pat Bracken found themselves 15-4 down at the half way stage, but managed to stop the rot and only lost 24-9.

There was disappointment for York 'A' in the EIBA Over-60s Double Rinks game against Hornsea as they lost 46-33.

With three ends to play both at home and away the aggregate score had been reduced to four shots at 34-30, but Hornsea took full advantage of York chasing the shots.

At home, John Micklethwaite, Tex Stevens, Roger Ford and Graham Instone came from 3-1 down after four ends to lead 14-4 after 11 ends on their way to a 21-16 victory.

However, away, Dudley Williams, Malcolm Harrison, Phil Parsons and Graham Brooke found it tough going as they trailed 16-5 at the half way stage.

Although they won three on the trot to make the score 21-12 with three ends to play, they were unable to make further inroads and eventually lost 30-12.

York’s 'B' team play North Cave tomorrow at 12.30pm.

On Saturday, Yetton Trophy holders York take on Selby, starting at noon.

York also play Doncaster in both Yorkshire Leagues Two and Three on Saturday, with the games starting at 12.30pm.

On Sunday, York play their first game in this season’s Egham Trophy as they take on Huddersfield, starting at noon.
