YORK City Ladies reserves crashed out of the county cup to a strong Guisborough team, whom City had previously beaten this season.

However, in a game dominated by gusting winds, there was to be no repeat of that outcome as the northern hosts surged into the next round as 4-1 victors.

Guisborough started on the attack from the off to set the pattern of the encounter.

From a corner a shot was well saved by Sam Knight, but the ball bounced off an upright and rolled along the goal-line. The referee signalled the ball had crossed before a last-ditch clearance from Kira Robinson.

Buoyed by that opener, Guisborough attacked with even more gusto only for Knight to deny the home raids.

The lead was swiftly doubled after a surge down the left wing prompting a change by manager Jonny Bruce who brought on Rachel Harding for Amy Smith.

York’s bid for midfield control, however, was stymied by the hosts until a quick counter from York and fine interplay brought a deserved strike for Hollie Smith and a single-goal half-time deficit.

After strong words from the manager, York kicked off the second half with the wind behind them and a determination to claw their way back at least to parity.

But again Guisborough started the second half as they started the first, laying siege only to find Knight in defiant form with a string of saves.

Guisborough finally found another breakthrough with another raid along the left flank and a kind bounce for a striker to finish.

York started to press with Ellie Randall and Jordanne Devine getting forward on the flanks and Smith continuing to menace the home defence.

Jade Harrison forced a fine save after a stinging half-volley, but that was the closest York came as other less opportunities went begging.

It was left to Guisborough to finally seal the win, exploiting a mistake in the York defence for a fourth goal.

York’s player of the game was Georgia Marsden.
