GOALS from Jazz Whitwell and Lou Ross helped York City Ladies get the new season off to a winning start against Scunthorpe and Bottesford.

Whitwell had earlier narrowly missed the target on 13 minutes after a bright start to the game.

Goalkeeper Chloe Precious had to be equal to a strong Scunthorpe strike moments later but, after Sara Renfrew had forced a save at the other end, Whitwell opened the scoring following a tactical switch by manager Kayleigh Davies.

The team’s wingers swapped flanks and girl-of-the-game Beth Clayton and Jess Barnes went on to combine to help Whitwell break the deadlock.

York went into the interval leading 1-0 and doubled their advantage seven minutes into the restart when half-time sub Ross converted a Whitwell centre. The Minster ladies were unlucky not to add a third goal when Clayton glanced just wide.
