Sausages are the secret to the success of a café named the third best greasy spoon in the UK.

The Full English in Ponders End beat more than 250 restaurants all vying for a chance to win a competition launched to celebrate traditional British grub.

Maxine Offredi, who set up the café a year ago in Durants Road with her sister Tracy Reed, is “over the moon” they have come third in the competition – and said their delicious sausages are key to the café's popularity.

She said even vegetarians are often unable to resist the sausages, which the pair buy from S.J. Smith in Baker Street.

She said: “I’m chuffed, but next year we’ll win. I’m really pleased with that, we’re over the moon – especially because we’ve only been open a year.”

The sisters will enter the competition – which is run by Insurance provider Staveley Head – again next year to make sure Enfield takes home the bacon.

Uplands Diner in Swansea won the competition, followed by a PJs café in Leeds who snatched second place.
