LEEDS United head coach Garry Monk praised his side's character after their late 2-0 Sky Bet Championship win over Burton at Elland Road.

Chris Wood opened the scoring on 83 minutes from the spot after Souleymane Doukara was fouled.

Doukara then made the game safe six minutes into stoppage time to move Leeds within one point of the play-offs.

"It wasn't the best of performances, considering the context of the week we have had," Monk said. "Today was important and it was important to get the win.

"We are not overly happy with the performance but are delighted with the desire to get the win.

"I was pushing the players to put on a good performance, but I knew it would be hard after Tuesday night.

"We showed real character and determination to fight to the end. We had to scrap but we knew we would get chances and it was about taking those chances.

"There is great spirit and the boys are confident, there is a good mood around the place and we have had a great week.

"We had to defend really well today and we did that on the whole. Our mentality is getting stronger and we will always be in with a chance of winning the game.

"We saw the game out well and it's been a successful week. You get rewarded for hard work."

Burton had come closest to opening the scoring when Ben Turner crashed a header against the Leeds crossbar on 35 minutes.

The defeat leaves Burton still searching for their first ever Championship away win.

Disappointed Albion boss Nigel Clough felt the defeat summed up his side's bad luck on the road.

He said: "That's what it's been like for us away from, things are just not falling our way.

"We have to remember that we are Burton Albion playing at Leeds, we are playing against a massive team.

"Leeds are a good team and this is a very hard place to come. This season is a great learning curve for the players who are learning all the time.

"I felt that we played well today despite the defeat. If we keep playing like that then our first away win will not be too far away.

"I thought that we defended and battled well today. We stuck in there for a long time and were very close to getting what would have been a valuable point.

"We had our chances and if Palmer's header had gone in things could have been different.

"We will keep fighting and be ready for another big game against Barnsley next Saturday."
