Leeds United 3, Reading 2

WILL he or won't he? After delivering Leeds United to safety, doubts still remain about the future of head coach Steve Evans.

A 3-2 home win against Reading guaranteed Championship football at Elland Road next season, with Evans having fulfilled his brief.

His contract is due to expire this summer but club owner Massimo Cellino has yet to make a decision about who will lead Leeds in 2016-17.

Evans played a straight bat when questioned after a win which lifted his side into the top half of the table.

"At the moment, I am fully focused on our next two games against Wolves (Tuesday) and Hull," he said.

"I have never made any secret of the fact that I want to be Leeds' head coach next term. The president (Cellino) will meet me for talks when he is ready."

Evans may have had his critics but many believe has done enough to earn at least a one-year contract.

Another man under fire, Leeds striker Chris Wood, was the match-winner with a double which spoiled Royals manager Brian McDermott's return to Elland Road.

United's build-up to the game had been hampered by injuries, a sickness bug and suspension.

The quality may not have been great but the game ebbed and flowed between sides safely tucked in mid-table.

McDermott, infamously dismissed twice by Cellino during his 13-month spell at Leeds, was afforded a warm welcome – and it looked as though he would gain revenge when Leeds fell behind on 38 minutes in familiar fashion.

They conceded an unnecessary free-kick, failed to deal with Oliver Norwood's delivery into the box and left the unmarked Michael Hector with a simple far-post goal.

Leeds responded with an equaliser three minutes into the second half when Toumani Diagouraga headed in Gaetano Beradi's deep cross.

Wood, blasted by Leeds fans for missing two good chances at Burnley the previous week, then nodded in Charlie Taylor's centre from the opposite flank on 69 minutes.

United lost the lead with ten minutes remaining when substitute Deniss Rakels fired in as Leeds switched off after referee Jeremy Simpson controversially over-ruled his linesman about a throw-in.

But Wood had the final say, cashing in on an error by Jake Cooper to finish with aplomb five minutes from time. It was the first time Leeds had scored more than twice at home this season.
