Sky Bet Championship: Leeds United 1 Huddersfield Town 4

SELLING 2016-17 Leeds United season tickets is going to be a difficult job.

The Whites’ large fan-base is becoming increasingly disillusioned about how the club is being run, and Saturday’s meek surrender against neighbours Huddersfield Town at Elland Road didn't help.

A near-30,000 crowd saw the Terriers run Leeds off their feet to ease their own relegation worries with a dominant 4-1 victory.

Leeds, whose away results are far better than those at home, went into the game on the back of three successive wins.

Rather than build on those results, however, they dished up another sub-standard display against a hungrier Town.

“Huddersfield wanted it more than us in certain areas,” said Leeds coach Steve Evans.

“When I joined, the job was to keep Leeds in the Championship, and that gets forgotten. We have become a mid-table side.”

Despite the loss, Leeds remain in 13th in what has been an ordinary Championship but there still seems no clear plan as to how to move the club forward.

Huddersfield needed the points more than Leeds, and it showed.

Nahki Wells missed an early penalty, saved by Marco Silvestri, after the excellent Joe Lolley was tripped but Wells recovered to lead Leeds’ defence a merry dance in the second half.

Stuart Dallas headed Leeds in front on 22 minutes but Town deservedly drew level when Mark Hudson scored just before the interval when Leeds failed to deal with a corner.

Huddersfield were playing a high tempo, which Leeds could not match, and coach David Wagner played his cards perfectly.

First, substitute Harry Bunn netted with a volley after Leeds once again failed to deal with an unnecessarily conceded 68th-minute corner.

Then Wells took centre stage, expertly creating a tap-in for another sub, Karim Matmour, before lashing home the fourth himself. Leeds had imploded in eight minutes.

It was hard to believe that Leeds won 3-0 at Huddersfield in November – one of several decent results on the road. However, at home they have struggled to put together decent performances. They have managed just five Championship wins, with all bar the 2-1 success against Hull being scratchy.

Leeds seem to have no set tactical pattern, and against Huddersfield didn’t seem to know whether to play on the break or press when Town had possession. In the end, they did neither.

Because of the Easter international break, Evans has time to come up with a formula to prevent the season wasting away.

That starts with a trip to his old club, Rotherham, who are enjoying a revival under Neil Warnock, the old Leeds chief, on Saturday, April 2.
