STEVE THOMPSON, assistant coach at Leeds United, has been suspended.

A statement this afternoon from the Elland Road club said: "The Director of Football, Nicola Salerno, has today (April 2) suspended the assistant coach Steve Thompson from his duties at the club.

"This is an internal matter and the club will make no further comment on this internal issue."

Thompson joined Leeds from Huddersfield, where he was assistant manager, in December and the 50-year-old had formerly been on the coaching staff at Blackpool - where he was caretaker boss on two occasions.

Together with head coach Neil Redfearn, Leeds have lost only three SkyBet Championship games in 2015.

At his press conference for Leeds' game with Blackburn on Saturday, Redfearn said he was "bitterly disappointed" by what he termed a "really strange decision".

He added that he would now need to think about his future at the club, arguing he was in a "difficult situation".
