Wigginton Grasshoppers win Sunday Morning Football League basement battle

WIGGINTON Grasshoppers were 3-1 winners in the battle of the basement in division two of the Ian’s Cars of Barlby York Sunday Morning Football League.

All the goals came in the second half as bottom side Wiggy overcame second-bottom Hambleton to close to within two points of their rivals.

Grasshoppers went ahead when Ben Coates converted a cross by John Cavanagh three minutes into the second period.

Wiggy ’keeper James Ellerby saved a Hambleton penalty, but the away side levelled through Luke Roberts after the defence failed to clear after the spot-kick heroics.

Grasshoppers regained the lead on the hour when Luke Roberts headed in from a corner.

Tom Coates then made sure of the points from the penalty spot.

Hounds took a bite out of Nestlé Flag’s lead at the top of division one with a 2-1 win.

Flag, who had won their opening seven league games, trailed 1-0 at the break after Shane Forrest had hit the target. Hounds doubled their lead early in the second half with a goal from Alan Jackson.

Flag struck back 15 minutes from time with a goal by Pete Laidlaw, but it was not enough as Hounds held out to move into second spot, five points behind the leaders.

Hambleton Lions moved into second place in division three after two goals from Ben Rawson and a Daniel Tame strike helped them to a 3-0 win over Shoulder of Mutton.

The top-of-the-table division four north clash between Acomb WMC and Leeman United finished 3-3.

On target for leaders Acomb were Neil Ducey and Daniel Snaith, who bagged two penalties, while Leeman replied with goals from Jimmy Clamp, Jamie Moore and Liam Stilgoe.

Hemingbrough thumped Cueball Reserves 7-1 with a brace apiece from Luke Zacharenko and Christopher Cauldwell, plus goals from Guy May, Jonathan Collard and Steve Irving. Cueball’s goal was netted by Craig Atkin.

Skelton’s hopes of progressing to the semi-finals of the North Riding County Cup were dashed after they crashed 5-1 at Normanby Hall. Chris Holmes netted Skelton’s goal.
