Pickering Town hoping for Northern Counties win against Maltby Main

PICKERING Town will hope to make their way back up the Northern Counties East League premier division table with a win at Maltby Main tomorrow.

Manager Mark Wood’s squad are in tenth place after an easy 3-1 victory over lowly Brodsworth but are just two points behind sixth placed Selby Town – albeit having played three games more.

Wood was pleased with the three points but wants his side to sharpen up their finishing after they missed a host of early chances against a Brodsworth team which has conceded more than 100 goals this term and bagged two points.

Regarding his squad for the Maltby match, Wood said: “Andrew Dawson has left the club to join first division Tadcaster Albion because we couldn’t guarantee him first team football. We have re-signed Danny Gildea, who is back from working in the United States, and Ricky Greening is back in the fold.

“On the injury front, Lyle Hillier and Andrew Park are both still absent with long term groin injuries, Jonathan Newton is also absent with a niggling groin strain, Darren Clough was unavailable on Saturday and Lee Pallender was also absent on Saturday owing to work.”

Selby Town are next to face Brodsworth and, following their midweek 2-1 West Riding County Cup defeat against Yorkshire Amateurs, Bob Lyon’s side will be happy to pick up what seems a guaranteed victory.

First half goals from Tesfa Walton and Justin Bowler secured Amateurs’ progression with Steve Lyon getting a late consolation for the Robins on Tuesday night as the match was finally played at the seventh time of asking.

After a 2-1 derby loss against Farsley Celtic in mid-week, Harrogate Town continue their mission to pull themselves out of the Blue Square North relegation mire at fellow strugglers Hyde United, while Harrogate Railway, also struggling near the foot of UniBond League division one north, go to promotion-hunting Colwyn Bay.
